Dealing With Employees Who Smoke

There is much controversy surrounding the new 20-foot smoke-free zones that will be established around businesses across the state of Arizona. While this sounds like a strict proposition to carry out, a large number of U.S. employers have gone further, stating that their complete buildings and facilities, including the surrounding areas are off limits to smokers.

Apart from obvious health concerns and skyrocketing insurance costs to compensate, most smokers are simply less efficient and productive than non-smokers, and are at least 10% less efficient. In addition to the usual breaks for lunch and coffee, smokers take an average of 4 more breaks a day for smoking. In fact, some people estimate that employers are paying smoking employees more than $3,000 annually to smoke!

The concern that some employers have, however, is what to do about the smokers that buck the trend and may actually be very efficient and valuable to the company?
